Dry eye, a common source of discomfort, is when tear flow lacks a sufficient amount of moisture and lubrication. Decreased production of tear flow can disrupt the tear film, which causes it to break down, creating dry spots on the surface of the eye.
Symptoms Include:
- Increased tearing
- Redness
- Burning; itching
- Lids stuck together upon awakening
- Eye fatigue after short periods of reading
- Light sensitivity
- Sandy feeling
- Mucous discharge
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses
Causes of Dry Eye
Dry eye may be caused by an imbalance in the composition of tears. In addition, a lack of tear production, eyelid conditions, skin conditions, natural aging process, menopause, medications and environmental factors may also contribute to dry eye.
Treatment
In order to effectively treat dry eye, a comprehensive eye examination is needed to determine the causing factors of dry eye. The goal of treatment is to restore a normal tear film, which will help minimize dryness, blurred vision and discomfort. Dry eye, if left untreated, may lead to more serious conditions, including eye inflammation, infection and corneal scarring. The most common form of treatment is the use of artificial tears. Dr. Bello traditionally recommends Viva-Drops, Oasis TEARS™, or Oasis TEARS™ PLUS, which lubricate the eyes and helps maintain moisture. If you are also diagnosed with an eyelid condition, such as Blepharitis, Dr. Bello may recommend OCuSOFT®, a disposable lid scrub cleanser. Continued dry eye may require more aggressive treatment, such as insertion of punctual plugs.
