Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) provides patients ages 21-45 with another option when dealing with vision correction. Visian ICL, an intraocular lens, is used during surgery to correct myopia (nearsightedness). This procedure was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005 and has been in the European market since 1997. The Visian ICL has been implanted in over 150,000 eyes to date.

The Visian ICL is placed between the iris and the natural lens of the eye. The Visian ICL does not replace the eye's natural lens. Therefore, it acts instead, as a permanent contact lens, which is removable, if needed.

Unique UV Protection

Long-term exposure to UV radiation can damage the eyes, and also increases the chance of eye disorders, including the development of cataracts and retinal problems. As an added feature, the Visian ICL's advanced lens material contains a UV blocker, that actually prevents harmful UVA and UVB rays from entering the eye, which can help prevent the development of UV related eye disorders.

Visian ICL vs. LASIK or PRK

The Visian ICL offers vision correction that’s sharper, clearer, more vivid, and has greater depth and dimension than other procedures. The main advantage of the Visian ICL over traditional corrective laser eye surgery, such as LASIK or PRK, is that patients may experience significant improvement in quality of vision after the lens is implanted. This is due to many contributing factors including:

• Better night vision: 24% of LASIK patients, and 16% of PRK patients, reported a night vision reduction.
• Predictable outcomes: Both LASIK and PRK are less predictable with higher vision correction. The Visian ICL also has the ability to treat patients who are very nearsighted (as high as -20.0 diopters).
• Short recovery time: Additional time is needed for LASIK patients to allow “the flap” to heal. For PRK patients, most will experience visual delay recovery, which can last up to 4 weeks. There is no flap with the Visian ICL or long visual recovery.
• Dry eye: Over 29% of LASIK patients experience dryness after the procedure, which can cause vision to be unclear. There are also dry eye occurrences during the recovery period with PRK.
• Removability: LASIK and PRK removes corneal tissue, which can not be replaced after the procedure. The Visian ICL lens does not remove corneal tissue. In addition, it can be removed and does not limit future treatment options. [i]
