PreLex with crystalens®
Technology beyond Lasik
During middle age, usually beginning in our 40s, people experience blurred vision at near points, such as when reading, text messaging or working at the computer. There's no getting around it — this happens to
everyone at some point in our life, even those who have never had a vision problem before.
Currently, an estimated 90 million people in the United States either have presbyopia or will develop it by 2014. This is generating a huge demand for eyeglasses, contact lenses, and surgery that can help presbyopes deal with their failing near vision
PreLex stands for:
Presbyopic Lens Exchange
Unlike other refractive disorders (such as near-sightedness), presbyopia occurs when the lens within the eye loses its flexibility, preventing the ability to focus accurately on near objects.
LASIK or LASEK (laser treatments) are NOT SUITABLE for those with presbyopia because there will still be a need to wear reading glasses for near vision. Other reasons that PreLex can be a better option for you include:
· LASIK can cause dry eye
· Patients with large pupils are not good candidates for LASIK, and can have debilitating visual aberrations (starbursts, halos, multiple images) and loss of contrast sensitivity at night, after LASIK
· Ectasia is specifically associated with LASIK because LASIK penetrates the cornea much more deeply than other procedures (due to the flap) and therefore, can result in the excessive thinning and structural compromise of the cornea
· There have been cases of long-term negative consequences of LASIK (including undiagnosed glaucoma due to a thinner cornea)
· There may be a "refractive surprise" post-operatively after cataract surgery, due to the limitations of keratometry and IOL calculation formulas in post-Lasik eyes
· Lasik can only be performed up to +6.00 diopters in farsighted patients and -7.00 diopters in nearsighted patients
· In addition, changes can take place in the shape and thickness of the cornea during the healing process. These changes can result in a slight regression (loss of corrective effect) of the immediate LASIK result over time. In general, the stronger your eyeglass prescription is prior to LASIK, the more risk there is that there may be some regression
· Enhancements may be needed to correct any regression
PreLex involves removing your natural lens, which can no longer focus properly, and replacing it with a lens that can. The crystalensÒ main objective is to reduce the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. You should be able to read, play golf and drive, for instance, without wearing glasses or contact lenses.
Never develop a cataract!!!
Apart from offering good working vision, without having to rely on eyeglasses or contact lenses, the procedure also means that cataracts can NEVER develop. This is because the natural lens, which can become cloudy in later life, has been removed.
Although this procedure is elective and not covered by insurance because there is no cataract present, it is truly affordable!!!!!
